These ships have been the source of much discussion and ridicule on the PGS vessel I am on at the moment. But of course they are all qualified naval architects... Just look at the Explorer....sailed with the gun deck underwater......

The only issue I can see with X-Bow design is the Aquamaster thrusters. I have been told that these are prone to bearing failure due to continuous action in one direction i.e. forwards. A dynamic positioned ship normally works in all directions, so the thrusters get an even distribution of force in all directions over the long term. Another disadvantage is the increased draught and exposure of the pods. Cough....something that has caused other ships to run aground / rip off thruster. I believe this is why the latest V ships are conventional screw...

All of this is circumstantial, I have no evidence of such, just what I have been told...... :P

Cheers for the info. The bow looks very strange. I see what you mean about the thrusters in shallow water a recipe for disaster

I'm sure I saw plans for a Catamaran/Trimaran seismic vessel a few years back I think it was IX Survey vessel

Maybe the Triton that Gardline has now? They broke the tradition on buying ships younger than 25yrs and got it a few years back for the MCA work I believe.
